A Florida man allegedly tried to kill his sister by stabbing her with a machete while she was asleep next to her baby.
Ruben Altidor, 36, is being held without bail at the Broward County Main Jail after being charged with attempted murder and aggravated child abuse. According to an arrest report obtained by local independent news station WPLG, Altidor was arrested on Monday after officers from the Margate Police Department responded to a home in Margate and heard a woman screaming from inside.
The woman ran outside and told police that someone was trying to kill her. When police spoke to the woman's cousin, she said her alleged attacker was Altidor, the woman's brother.
According to the arrest report, the woman was covered in blood and had several deep cuts to her legs and hands. Police said she had a 10-inch gash in her right thigh that reached down to the bone, several missing fingers, and a 4-inch laceration on the back of her right hand. She told police on her way to the hospital that Altidor allegedly stabbed her with a machete multiple times and asked her, "Oh my God, why aren't you dead yet?"
When police searched the home, they saw a large amount of blood in the bedroom with a trail that went down the hallway and out of the house. They found a sheath for a machete in the kitchen and the suspected weapon under a bed in another bedroom.
Police said the woman's 1-year-old daughter was asleep with her on her bed at the time of the attack, but the baby was not harmed.
Altidor was arrested at the scene. According to online jail records, Altidor was also charged with a probation violation in connection with an aggravated battery charge from a separate case. His next court date was not available.
