A Florida woman tracked down her boyfriend in an Uber, suspecting he was cheating with someone who had been caught with the man before, and shot the alleged mistress in front of him to "make a point," according to police.

Katherine Kelly, 24, of Cocoa, allegedly pulled a pink and black Glock 43 handgun from her purse and fired a round into the Volkswagen Passat that her boyfriend was driving — striking the victim in the shoulder — after taking an Uber to their location early Saturday morning, Oct. 24, an arrest affidavit says.

"When asked if she felt guilty for shooting [the victim], she stated she believed in 'Karma' as [the victim] should have known that [the boyfriend] had a girlfriend," according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Kelly's boyfriend and the victim met around 1:20 a.m. and parked in an "open field adjacent to his friend's house" before Kelly showed up, the affidavit says, citing statements the boyfriend, the victim and Kelly allegedly gave police. The Passat they were in allegedly belongs to Kelly.

"She approached her vehicle and assumed that [her boyfriend] was inside of the vehicle, seated in the front driver's seat," the affidavit says. "As she got closer to the vehicle, the headlights turned on. … As the vehicle started to move forward, she retrieved her firearm from her purse, pointed it in the direction of the passenger side of the vehicle, and fired a round."

Kelly initially claimed she fired in "self-defense" but later said she "wanted to 'make a point' as she assumed [her boyfriend] was cheating on her again," according to the affidavit.

The victim allegedly told police that Kelly's boyfriend texted her asking if she wanted to "hang out" that night. She agreed, and Kelly's boyfriend picked her up from her home before driving to his friend's residence in Port St. John, according to the affidavit.

Kelly's boyfriend "received a text message from Kelly of a screenshot of his location," which was near the victim's residence, per the affidavit. The boyfriend looked at Kelly's location and saw that she was "traveling towards him from their residence," according to police.

"This prompted him to drive around the area of Port St. John to evade her," the affidavit says. "After some time, he backed the vehicle into a field in the area of 6599 Bamboo Avenue and turned the vehicle off. He then observed Kelly approaching him and [the victim] in the parked vehicle."

When police tracked Kelly down, she allegedly admitted to shooting into the car and told them where the Glock was. She told police that her boyfriend had taken her car without permission earlier that morning and she paid for an Uber to travel to Port St. John to find it, according to the affidavit.

Text messages exchanged between Kelly and her boyfriend around the time of the shooting show Kelly accusing him of cheating, according to the affidavit. Kelly allegedly sent these texts:

Kelly: Ur a f—ing cheater
Kelly: Just like last time ur a f—ing Cheater
Kelly: Ur not slick and im tired of the f—ing lies
Kelly: Smart for leaving before I'm there to take her home
Kelly: I waws finna shoot sum istg [I swear to God]
Kelly: This is so f—ed up
Kelly: Bet u bringing that b— to the crib u f—ing weird asf for that and u do me so f—ing wrong
Kelly: Ur cheating and lying is the issue u good at this s— and playing tf out of me. W my own s—. U don't give one f— ab me.

After Kelly shot the victim, Kelly's boyfriend sent her a message saying, "U shot her bro," according to the affidavit.

Police say the texts "are significant" because they "further evidence" that Kelly knew her boyfriend was cheating on her with the victim, as he "previously cheated on her" with the same woman.

"The text messages show that Kelly made the conscious decision to arrive at [the friend's residence] for the purpose of confronting [the boyfriend] with [the victim]," according to the affidavit. "Furthermore, Kelly stated that [her boyfriend] was 'smart' that he left his friend's residence prior to her arrival, as she was 'finna shoot sum,' meaning she was going to shoot someone."

The victim survived and was treated at a local hospital for her gunshot wound. Kelly is charged with attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied vehicle and use of a firearm during the commission of a crime. She's due to be arraigned on Nov. 24.
