‘Outrageous Accusation’: Jeffrey Toobin Flat Out Calls Kris Kobach a Racist to His Face

CNN’s legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin didn’t mince words when he blasted Kris Kobach, a hardline immigration hawk, during a CNN segment which addressed Kobach’s controversial support of a program requiring voters to have ID.

“Kris has devoted his career to stopping black people and poor people from voting. That has been your goal for decades,” Toobin quipped.

“That is an outrageous accusation,” Kobach replied, “So If you like photo ID, you are trying to stop people of color from voting. That is outrageous.”

As Kansas’ chief elections officer, Kobach has been credited with creating one of the country’s toughest voter laws. However, the proof of citizenship requirement was struck down by U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson in June. She also required Kobach to undergo six hours of legal education. Kobach is appealing the decision which held the voter ID law unconstitutional.

“Your problem is that some people vote for Democrats and you want to stop that to establish voter requirements,” Toobin said during the segment.

Kobach is running for Governor in Kansas, and according to the latest polls is virtually tied with Democratic state Sen. Laura Kelly. Trump endorsed Kobach late in the primary.
