Man called hospital to ask about dying stepmother's open bedsores then never got her medical attention while she wasted away: Police

A Louisiana woman was found dead in her home, and now her stepson and his girlfriend face felony charges.

Justin Bueche, 43, and Heidi Trahan, 42, are currently behind bars after being charged with cruelty to the elderly. According to arrest documents obtained by local ABC affiliate WBRZ, police responded to a home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Thursday after receiving a report about a woman who died. Police said a 74-year-old woman, later identified in the documents as Bueche's stepmother, was found deceased wearing nothing but a red shirt and a soiled adult diaper. She allegedly had bedsores on her back that were so deep her bones were exposed.

Bueche and Trahan had been living with the woman and serving as her caregivers for the past five years after she suffered a stroke and became partially bedridden.

According to the arrest report, Bueche told police that his stepmother was completely bedridden two months before her death and could not move from the couch. Bueche said that on Sept. 17, he called a local hospital to ask about how to treat his stepmother's bedsores. Despite being told to take his stepmother to a hospital, police said neither he nor Trahan sought medical attention for the older woman.

Police said Trahan, Bueche's girlfriend, told them that she was the woman's primary caregiver. According to the arrest report, police found the woman lying in human waste. Trahan allegedly told police that she and Bueche only changed the woman's diapers "maybe once or twice a day."

When police executed a search warrant on the home, they said they found little food. Police found animal waste on the floor of several rooms.

Local CBS affiliate WAFB reported that an autopsy would be conducted on the woman to determine a cause and manner of death.

Bueche and Trahan were both arrested on Friday and remain in custody. Their next court dates were not made publicly available.
