Husband who was only allowed in delivery room if he behaved himself assaulted his mother-in-law and put the hospital on lockdown

A Minnesota man whose wife was trying to keep him away from her while she delivered their baby will have to be on his best behavior after being sentenced to probation.

Dillon Field, 30, pleaded guilty to domestic assault in connection with an incident that occurred at Maple Grove Hospital in Maple Grove, Minnesota, in February. According to a probable cause statement reviewed by Law&Crime, Field's wife was giving birth to the couple's baby on Feb. 5 when police were called to the delivery room after receiving a call from Field's mother-in-law about an assault.

Police said Field's wife was hiding in the bathroom of her hospital room after she kicked Field out twice.

The wife told police that she had been living with her mother for several months because Field had allegedly been abusive toward her. When she went to the hospital to deliver the baby, she told Field that he could come under the condition that he "behave himself." Field arrived at the hospital and "immediately got verbally aggressive" with his wife's mother, and he was promptly kicked out of the delivery room.

The wife and her mother agreed to let Field come back into the room "on the condition that he not argue or yell." While the wife was in the delivery room's bathtub, Field "began to aggressively yell at her," so she kicked him out of the room a second time. Her mother went to get nurses, and Field attempted to lock himself inside the bathroom with his wife. Field's mother-in-law told police that while she was moving past Field to get the nurses, he "shoved" her, then left the delivery room. The incident sent the entire hospital into lockdown.

According to police, the wife said Field's "pupils become pinpoint and he gets a smirk on his face" when he "assaulted her in the past." He had the same look on his face "when he was trying to shut the bathroom door." The wife described an alleged past incident when she was nine months pregnant and Field "tackled" her and "put his full weight on her belly." According to the statement, the woman said she and Field went to marriage counseling due to his behavior, but she ended up moving out in July 2025 because of the alleged abuse.

Field, a former Hennepin County Sheriff's Office detention deputy, was initially charged with domestic assault and assault. The assault charge was dismissed when he pleaded guilty to domestic assault. On Friday, he was sentenced to one year on probation and was ordered to complete 16 hours of community service. He was also ordered to complete a domestic violence course, attend counseling, and take prescribed medications.

If Field completes his probation, the domestic assault conviction will be dismissed.
