An Idaho man allegedly broke into a woman's home in the middle of the night and tried to rape her while she was sleeping as a child also slept in a nearby room.
Tyler Humphries, 39, stands accused of attempted rape, attempted strangulation, domestic violence battery and burglary, court records say. The East Idaho News obtained an arrest affidavit that said the incident occurred around 3 a.m. July 16.
The woman reportedly told cops she woke up to Humphries standing over her with his pants down. He said he "was going to rape her until she told him the truth," cops wrote. Humphries then allegedly got on top of her and tried to sexually assault her. The victim screamed for help, but Humphries covered her mouth and began choking her, the affidavit reportedly said.
She escaped his grasp and ran to a child's room. The child wrapped the victim in a blanket and confronted Humphries.
Humphries reportedly slammed the child against a wall and fled.
Cops responded and saw the victim had bruising on her thigh. She also said her throat "felt like it was burning." She was taken to the hospital where doctors noted her airway was in danger of closing.
The suspect was arrested when he returned to the home later that morning. Upon his arrest, he was allegedly found in possession of some marijuana and a glass pipe typically used to smoke methamphetamine.
In interviews with cops, he claimed he was just trying to "cuddle" with the victim, but then admitted to assaulting her, the affidavit reportedly said. The relationship between the suspect and victim was not immediately clear.
Humphries was arrested and taken to the Bonneville County Jail, where he remains. His next court date is set for July 31.
