Two children in California, ages 4 and 10, were shot dead in broad daylight by their own father, according to reports. People on a passing bus and bystanders allegedly saw the horror unfold.
"Oh my God I was on the bus when it happened," a witness can be heard saying in a Citizen App video that captured the aftermath of the Los Angeles shooting, according to local ABC affiliate KABC.
Officials with the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Metro confirmed to local CW affiliate KTLA that an L.A. Metro bus was part of the investigation and crime scene in Pico-Union. The outlet reports that a woman on the bus saw everything happen on Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Catalina Street and Venice Boulevard around 12:40 p.m. and yelled for the bus to stop, hoping to help the slain children.
"Police investigating a shooting in the Pico-Union area have requested video footage from a Metro bus, which was passing through the area at the time and may have captured the incident," a Metro spokesperson told KTLA in a statement. "The Los Angeles Police Department is leading the investigation."
The man who allegedly shot the children was hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and is currently in police custody at the hospital. His condition was not immediately known. He is believed to be between the ages of 30 and 40, authorities say.
The two kids, who have not been publicly identified, were also transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead upon their arrival by medical staff, according to reports.
An LAPD spokesperson told KTLA and the Los Angeles Times that the shooting appeared to be a "possible attempted murder-suicide" and the suspect is believed to be the victims' father. No additional details have been released.
"He shot himself in the head," another witness could be heard saying on the Citizen App video. "He shot himself in the head," the person repeated.
