Mom walked in on 14-year-old son playing video games and 'started stabbing him' out of nowhere, DA says

A Texas mother walked in on her 14-year-old son while he was playing video games and "started stabbing him," with a witness hearing the teen scream "she's trying to kill me" as the attack unfolded, prosecutors say.

Janie King, 44, appeared in court Tuesday after being arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She is accused of stabbing her son during a Sept. 2 attack that led to an hourslong SWAT standoff at their home in West El Paso.

During King's Tuesday appearance, prosecutors described how she "just came in and started stabbing" her son with a small silver knife, according to local NBC affiliate KTSM. She also walked into the teen's room with a baseball bat but dropped it before stabbing him with the knife, prosecutors say.

"She's trying to kill me!" a witness reported hearing before they found King "cutting" the boy open with the knife, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by KTSM. The witness told police they called 911 after helping the victim to a bedroom and locking the door.

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds and was hospitalized, but survived. King was ordered held on a $60,000 bond and told to have no contact of any kind with the boy, according to KTSM.

"I would ask that whatever bond you give, that we make sure she's not in the home and not near the children," Assistant District Attorney Holly Rodriguez told the judge overseeing King's case on Tuesday.

King reportedly homeschools two of her children, including the son who was stabbed and a 12-year-old. Rodriguez said in court that the children have special needs. Their father works in Albuquerque, New Mexico, five days a week and is not home during that time, according to Rodriguez.

King was arrested after authorities managed to enter the family's home using a drill to open the garage door, KTSM reports. The judge handling her case said Tuesday that he plans to order a psychiatric evaluation for King.
