Husband stabs sleeping wife inside couple's bedroom before dragging her outside by her hair as first responders arrive at scene: Cops

A 75-year-old man in Florida is accused of trying to kill his defenseless wife as she slept, allegedly stabbing the sleeping woman in the back multiple times and repeatedly punching her before telling police he had nothing to do with the near-fatal attack.

Pratapsinh K. Thakor was taken into custody this week and charged with one count of attempted felony murder causing injury and one count of domestic battery causing harm in connection with the violent incident, records show.

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies with the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office responded on Sept. 1 at about 1 a.m. to the couple's apartment in the 1400 block of Northeast Miami Gardens Drive regarding a reported domestic violence incident.

Thakor allegedly entered the couple's bedroom "without being provoked" and "began stabbing [his wife] in the back while she slept.

"Once the victim woke up, she begged for the defendant to stop," the affidavit states.

The victim fought back and was able to wrest the knife away from her husband, police said. Once disarmed, Thakor continued to attack his wife "by punching her with a closed fist about her body," according to the affidavit.

Thakor's wife managed to get away from him long enough to call 911 and report the attack. When first responders arrived, they said she was on the ground outside the apartment and Thakor was "holding the victim by the hair."

Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Florida Aventura HCA Trauma Hospital for treatment. The medical staff said she suffered a punctured lung, two lacerations to the left side of her back, a laceration to her left arm, and a bloody mouth.

A "lethal cutting instrument" was also recovered from the scene, per the affidavit.

Once in custody, investigators said Thakor made an unsolicited statement in which he "denied any involvement" in the attack.

It was not immediately clear whether investigators discovered a possible motive for the stabbing.

Thakor was transported to the sheriff's Intracoastal District Station before being booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, records show.

During a Wednesday bond hearing, a judge ordered Thakor to be held without bond. It was not immediately clear when he was scheduled to make his next court appearance.
