A man is accused of causing the death of his 3-month-old godson when he propped a bottle against a stuffed animal to feed the boy with no supervision at a Florida apartment.
Dane Edwards, 23, is charged with manslaughter by aggravated child abuse in the death of baby Skylar Fisk. Edwards was arrested in Missouri and extradited to Florida, local NBC affiliate WESH reported.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime, deputies with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office responded around 11:40 a.m. on March 5, 2024, to an apartment complex in the 3200 block of Meridius Place for an unresponsive infant.
Paramedics rushed Skylar to a hospital, where he died.
Authorities spent more than two years investigating the case.
Doctors at the hospital noted that there was a "voluminous amount" of milk formula in the boy's esophagus, making them believe he aspirated.
Cops on scene found a stuffed toy sloth with a bottle tied around its arms on the floor of the boy's room.
Detectives spoke with Skylar's mother, who said she was taking a shower at the time and left Edwards, the boy's godfather who lived in the home, in charge of caring for the infant.
The mother told cops that she "asked everyone not to use the stuffed toy when feeding Skylar," the affidavit stated. She was concerned that her son could choke, she said. She also said Skylar had recently been to a doctor's appointment where he was deemed healthy.
After the mom got out of the shower, she heard Edwards running with Skylar in his arms and screaming that he was not breathing. She started CPR, and formula was coming out of Skylar's mouth and nose, the affidavit said.
Investigators spoke with Edwards, who said he fed Skylar around 8 a.m. and placed him in the baby swing and put on videos for Skylar to watch on the laptop. Edwards claimed he put the bottle on the floor, the affidavit said.
When he checked on his godson around 11:30 a.m., he found him "blue" and unresponsive.
Detectives had Edwards reenact how he fed Skylar by using a doll. When he picked it up, the head snapped back and he said, "I killed it," and laughed, cops wrote. He demonstrated how he fed the boy by cradling him in his arms in a traditional way. He then allegedly admitted to using the stuffed sloth to prop up the bottle to Skylar's mouth while he was in the baby swing.
Edwards insisted that Skylar was strong enough to push the bottle away from his mouth — but cops disagreed, and said it was "not possible" for him to do so.
"The timeline shows that at least an hour passed during which Skylar was left with an 8-ounce feeding bottle propped up by a stuffed sloth toy, unsupervised, demonstrating a reckless disregard for human life," they wrote.
The defendant argued with detectives, saying that he propped the bottle with the stuffed animal "all the time," per the complaint.
At this point, Edwards allegedly became combative and said that if he was going to be "grilled" about his "dead f—ing son," he wanted a "damn f—ing lawyer."
Before the end of the interview, he allegedly appeared to accept culpability.
"If this falls on anyone, it's me," he allegedly said.
Results of an autopsy came back in October 2025. The medical examiner said there was milk-based formula in Skylar's lungs. The death was "preventable," cops wrote.
"In conclusion, Dane Edwards, through culpable negligence, caused the premature death of Skylar Fisk by propping a feeding bottle with a stuffed toy and leaving the infant unattended for an extended period of time," detectives wrote. "By his own admission, he knew the practice was unsafe and could result in death. This reckless conduct demonstrated a gross disregard for human life and directly resulted in Skylar's death."
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant in May. After his arrest in Missouri, he was booked into the Osceola County Jail on Tuesday. His next court date was not immediately listed.
Skylar's obituary said he "passed peacefully" in his home. Edwards is described as an "uncle."
"He spent his life surrounded by those who loved him, residing with Mommy, Daddy, Uncle Dane Edwards, Uncle Anthony Fisk, and Uncle Michael Slater, with visits from Gigi, Mimi, and Grammy as often as possible," the obituary said.
