A 23-year-old Indiana man is accused of killing a 24-year-old man he believed was dating his ex-girlfriend, allegedly shooting the victim in the head as he sat next to a witness, before "turning and walking away."
Jaymon Trey Gilreath was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and charged with one count of murder in the slaying of Noah Slinkard, authorities announced.
According to a news release from the Bloomington Police Department, officers responded to a residence in the 1000 block of North Illinois Street about 8:15 p.m. for reports of a shooting. First responders found Slinkard on the front porch of an apartment with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics transported him to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:49 p.m.
Several callers reported a shooting and said the suspect was walking east on West 13th Street.
While officers were responding, Gilreath called 911 and told dispatchers he had just shot someone, according to an incident report obtained by Indiana Public Media. Police located him at 8:23 p.m. and took him into custody without incident.
Authorities also located a handgun along Gilreath's route from the scene that is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.
Slinkard had been sitting on the front porch with another man when Gilreath allegedly approached them on foot, according to the police department. That man told police "he observed Gilreath pull a handgun from his waistline and then shoot the victim in the head before turning and walking away," the news release stated.
Investigators quickly identified a likely motive for the shooting.
"Officers spoke with several witnesses and others present who advised officers that Gilreath believed that the victim was having a relationship with Gilreath's ex-girlfriend," the police department's news release said.
During an interview with detectives, Gilreath allegedly said he had a "gut feeling" that the mother of his child was cheating on him with Slinkard, Indianapolis NBC affiliate WTHR reported, citing court documents. Gilreath said he and the woman had planned to spend time together earlier that day, but she did not answer his calls or texts. He reportedly saw her truck parked outside her mother's house and spotted Slinkard on the porch.
Gilreath had driven past the residence with friends. He reportedly got out, told the friends he was going to fight Slinkard and warned them, "If you hear a pop, go," according to WTHR.
Gilreath reportedly told police he could not remember the shooting itself. A detective wrote that he recalled leaving the residence, noticing he was holding a gun, and suddenly realizing he had shot Slinkard.
Investigators obtained surveillance footage from the area reportedly showing the shooting as well as Gilreath leaving the scene.
Following his arrest, Gilreath was processed at the Monroe County Jail, where he was being held without bond as of Tuesday afternoon, records show. He is scheduled for a bond review hearing Oct. 27 and a pretrial conference Nov. 18.
