A man in North Carolina is accused of punching a woman walking on the sidewalk and commanding, "Don't wave to me" before running away.
Di-Quan Schafar Hunt, 32, will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced on Thursday. Following his arrest, he was brought to a "local medical facility for treatment" before being transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
On July 30, a woman was walking on the sidewalk on the 400 block of East Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina. In an interaction that authorities say was caught on video, Hunt approached her.
"Don't wave to me," the defendant told the woman, local CBS affiliate WBTV reported. He then allegedly punched her, stood over her body, and screamed, "you still talking?"
Hunt then left the area. The woman was brought to a local hospital "with serious but non-life-threatening injuries," police said.
The incident appeared to be a random attack, according to the area TV station.
On Thursday at about 10 a.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were called to the 800 block of East 4th Street. Someone there showed them a social media account "containing multiple videos that detectives were already investigating." One of those videos was the alleged attack on the sidewalk from the previous week.
Detectives determined Hunt was their suspect and arrested him that night. Police stressed that the investigation was ongoing as of Thursday.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office records show that Hunt was arrested at least nine times between October 2023 and December 2025.
