A Georgia father is accused of leaving his 2-year-old son alone in their apartment for six hours despite the boy suffering from a fever and being in "distress" until he died.
Lolo Anilus, 39, stands accused of second-degree murder, child cruelty and false statements.
The Cobb County Police Department said in a press release that officers responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sept. 3 to the Legacy at West Cobb Apartments in the 2600 block of Favor Road in Marietta for an unconscious toddler. Cops arrived to find the victim unresponsive.
Paramedics rushed the boy to the hospital, where he died.
An investigation revealed "elements of negligence." According to a warrant, the boy showed signs of "distress" including a fever, mouth pain and a refusal to eat. Rather than care for him, Anilus allegedly left the boy "unattended and unsupervised for approximately six hours."
The victim could not feed himself, change his diaper or receive medical treatment, the warrant states.
"This caused the juvenile male to experience excessive physical and mental pain that resulted in the juvenile male's death," cops wrote.
The warrant did not include the boy's cause of death.
Anilus claimed that he was home while the boy was sleeping. But Anilus' young daughter told investigators in a forensic interview that her father was actually out of the home, per the warrant.
Surveillance video also allegedly showed he left the apartment. The warrant does not say where he was located during this time.
Cops arrested Anilus and took him to the Cobb County Jail, where he is being held without bond. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 23.
