An Oklahoma father will spend decades behind bars for abusing his 6-year-old son, who was burned with cigarettes and left with multiple broken bones after a beating in the family's home.
A judge in Tulsa County sentenced Daniel Solomon to 40 years in a state correctional facility for abusing the child. The sentence came after Solomon entered a blind guilty plea to one count of child abuse by injuring, torturing or maiming and one count of child neglect.
In a blind plea, the defendant pleads guilty to charges without a negotiated deal with prosecutors.
Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler announced the sentence in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
"Daniel Solomon has been found guilty of child abuse by injuring, torturing, or maiming, and child neglect after he horrifically beat and burned a 6 year old boy," Kunzweiler wrote. "He entered a blind plea and received 40-years for abuse, and 40-years for neglect that will run concurrently."
The prosecutor also noted that Solomon will be required to complete at least 85% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
Additional details about the abuse were reported by local CBS affiliate KOTV, which obtained a probable cause affidavit.
According to the affidavit, Solomon inflicted the injuries on the boy inside the family's home in Tulsa on March 17. Three days later, Solomon took the boy to an emergency room in Amite, Louisiana, where he reportedly told medical staff the boy had been "beat up on the playground."
However, medical staff found the boy's injuries were inconsistent with Solomon's story, including cigarette burns on the victim's arms, chin and ear, as well as a broken arm, broken elbow, fractured rib and a swollen jaw. A toxicology test also came back positive for fentanyl, the station reported.
In an interview with investigators, the victim said that "Dad hurts him," per the affidavit. The victim's sibling told police his father typically strikes his brother for "not following instructions."
After learning of her son's injuries, the victim's mother flew to Louisiana. She reportedly told police that she had last seen her son on Feb. 20, saying that he was not injured at that time.
