A West Virginia couple allegedly locked an 11-year-old boy in a cage for several hours and beat him with a paddle when he went to the bathroom on himself.
Michael Edward Gibson, 44, is charged with child neglect creating substantial risk of death or injury and child abuse causing bodily injury. Angela Marie Gibson, 48, faces the same child neglect charge, court records say.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by local CBS affiliate WDTV, the Harrison County Sheriff's Office investigated the case along with Child Protective Services.
The boy was suffering from multiple bruises that were at different stages of healing. He reportedly told cops that Michael Gibson would beat him with a paddle so hard that he would be hurting for days.
The victim also alleged that he was locked in a "homemade bed that has four walls and a solid roof," the complaint reportedly said.
Deputies reportedly searched the home and found a cage with a lock on it in the boy's bedroom.
In an interview with detectives, he reportedly told cops that he spent hours in the cage and he would soil himself because he had no choice. Michael Gibson would then repeatedly hit him with the paddle, the complaint reportedly said.
Cops did not state the relationship between the Gibsons and the victim.
Cops arrested Michael Gibson on Sept. 4. He remains in the North Central Regional Jail on a $300,000 bond. Angela Gibson was booked into the same jail on Sept. 8. She has a $150,000 bond. They have a court date set for Thursday.
