A New York woman was charged with murder after police found her daughter unresponsive in their home.
Francis Cabello, 32, is in custody without bail after prosecutors said she killed her 5-year-old daughter, Fabiana Cabello Singh. According to reporting by local ABC affiliate WABC, Cabello appeared in court on Friday, two days after she allegedly called 911 and told dispatchers that she killed Fabiana. When police arrived at her home in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens, New York, on Oct. 14, they found Fabiana unresponsive.
According to reporting by WABC, Cabello called 911 on Wednesday and told dispatchers, "I killed my daughter." When police arrived at the home around 6:30 p.m., they met Cabello at the front door, where she allegedly told them, "She's upstairs, not breathing."
Police said they found Fabiana in a bedroom, bleeding from her nose and mouth. They brought her to Jamaica Hospital in a police car, and she was pronounced dead after she arrived. According to a criminal complaint obtained by WABC, the medical examiner determined that Fabiana had "scrapes to her face, as well as petechiae to her eyes, heart and lungs, findings which can be found in cases of asphyxia." Her exact cause of death was pending.
Cabello was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and was later taken into custody. Cabello's father, Franklin Cabello, lived in the same home and was present when police arrived after his daughter's 911 call. He told WABC that his daughter "has mental problems. On medication."
Local news outlet Gothamist spoke to Fabiana's father, 36-year-old Kuldeep Singh, who was estranged from Cabello but in touch with her as they co-parented their daughter. He told the outlet that he heard about his daughter's condition from the girl's grandmother, then rushed to the hospital where she died. Singh said Cabello "cared" for Fabiana "so much" and that he was not aware of any mental health issues.
Singh started a GoFundMe page to raise money for his daughter's funeral.
Cabello pleaded not guilty at her first court appearance and remains in custody. She is due to appear in court again on Oct. 20.
