A 2-year-old girl is not expected to survive after suffering a lacerated liver, skull fracture and other injuries after a beating by her mother's boyfriend, authorities in Texas say.
Gerardo Gonzalez, 29, and Jazmin Cisneros, 28, stand accused of injury to a child with serious bodily injury, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Gonzalez is accused of beating and stomping on the girl while her mother allegedly refused to stop him or contact cops because she did not want him to go to jail.
Deputies responded Aug. 6 to a report of a critically injured toddler at a home on the 3100 block of Rendezvous Court in Spring, which is just north of Houston. Paramedics airlifted the girl to a hospital. She had bruises all over her body and a black eye, according to a probable cause arrest affidavit. Doctors do not believe she will survive her injuries.
Gonzalez claimed the girl fell in the bathtub and became unconscious. But the girl's injuries were apparently far more serious than just a fall — she had a lacerated liver, broken pelvis and fractured skull, deputies said.
Cisneros told cops she had the girl and a 7-year-old child for the summer from their father, who lives in Chicago. She said she noticed on Aug. 1 that her daughter's "right ear appeared to be sagging." She confronted Gonzalez and he admitted to hitting the girl several times in the head, the affidavit stated.
When she woke up the next day, the girl's head and face were "extremely swollen." She also had a black eye.
"The defendant stated she did not take the [girl] to seek medical care nor did she contact law enforcement because she knew the co-defendant would go to jail," cops wrote.
On Aug. 6, Cisneros was sleeping when a panicked Gonzalez woke her up and said the girl was no longer breathing, the affidavit said. They then rushed to the hospital.
After receiving his Miranda warnings, Gonzalez admitted to hitting the girl four times in the head on Aug. 1 and stomping on her five days later, which caused the lacerated liver and broken pelvis, cops said.
Gonzalez is in the Harris County Jail on a $1 million bond while Cisneros has a $500,000 bond. They are next set to appear in court on Friday.
Gonzalez appeared at a probable cause hearing on Saturday.
"The reason that you're by yourself here today is that we don't want anybody else to know what you've been charged with because this is the kind of place where if they hear what you're charged with, you can get seriously hurt," Harris County Magistrate Judge Temple Ramming said, according to local NBC affiliate KPRC.
The judge added: "I've seen a lot of bad stuff the last 15 years of practicing criminal law. This is one of the worst. The allegations here are very, very serious and extremely troubling."
