A woman was driving to the beach with a friend in Florida when she pulled over and was smashed into by another vehicle, causing part of her leg to need to be amputated, according to authorities and her family.
Jasmin Selby, 25, was "seriously injured" in the hit-and-run crash, her father wrote in a GoFundMe seeking help.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating, according to regional Fox affiliate WOFL.
On the morning of Aug. 17, Selby was driving on a rural part of Colonial Drive in Orange County, Florida. The highway — also known as State Road 50 — runs horizontally across much of the state.
The woman was heading to Cocoa Beach with a friend, and when she got near the community of Christmas, Florida, she pulled her vehicle over, the fundraiser states. They were about a 45-minute drive from the beach, where Selby wanted to watch the sunrise before a scheduled job interview later that morning.
She said she put on her hazard lights and high beams and went to grab her phone from the back of her vehicle, and her father said "the next thing she remembers is waking up in the hospital screaming."
Selby's "left leg was damaged beyond surgical repair," and it had to be amputated above the knee, the fundraiser states. "She also suffered severe fractures to her left thumb and hand that required plates and screws, and she had to undergo emergency abdominal surgery, leaving dozens of staples along her abdomen."
As she was "in the middle of transitioning between jobs" when she was hit, she reportedly has no health insurance and is facing "overwhelming medical bills along with the many other expenses that come with a life-altering injury."
According to Selby's father, Robert Selby, no one stopped after the crash, "and no one has been held accountable for what happened" to his daughter.
"That's my child out there that they left in the middle of Highway 50, in the middle of nowhere," the father told WOFL.
Jasmin Selby was left thinking how the culprit could do it again.
"He or she was able to just drive away and leave me for dead … who knows what could happen to the next person," she said.
