A 23-year-old New York City mom allegedly pleaded for her life before she and her 5-month-old baby girl were pushed from the balcony of a 15th-floor Bronx apartment, local reports say. The mother died and her child was critically injured.
"Please don't do this!" the woman, who has not been publicly identified, was heard shouting by a witness who spoke to local ABC affiliate WABC.
The mom's words came just before she fell to her death at an apartment in the 2500 block of Olinville Avenue in the Bronx's Allerton section, WABC reports. Residents reportedly called 911 around 3:30 a.m. after hearing people shouting.
The mother and her baby were found outside the apartment building with injuries "indicative of falling from an elevated position," an NYPD spokesperson told Law&Crime.
The woman was rushed to a local hospital but died from her injuries. Her daughter was transferred to a high-level infant trauma center on Long Island, where she remained in critical condition.
Investigators are reportedly examining what happened inside the apartment before the pair fell, including a disturbance and a possible history of domestic violence. Sources told local Fox affiliate WNYW that police believe the mother and her child were pushed, and they are seeking a person of interest.
An NYPD spokesperson told Law&Crime that how the pair fell is "still under investigation."
Witnesses told detectives they heard a disturbance inside the woman's apartment before she was allegedly pushed, according to NBC News.
Police sources told NBC there is a reported history of domestic violence at the woman's address. Detectives reportedly want to question the woman's ex-boyfriend.
No arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon.
