Inset: Aiden Dombrowski. Background: Dombrowski during his arrest after he allegedly attacked a high school cross-country runner in the middle of a race (WAGA).
A Georgia college student emerged from the woods holding rocks before he allegedly attacked a high school cross-country runner during a race, cops say.
Aiden Dombrowski, 19, is charged with battery, according to the Newnan Police Department.
The incident happened around 8 a.m. Saturday at 56 Sewall Road in Newnan, Georgia, where several schools were competing in a high school cross-country meet.
Witnesses told cops that in the middle of the race, a man later identified as Dombrowski, who was wearing an East Coweta High School cross-country jersey, came running out of the woods. He allegedly ran onto the course and began punching a runner.
The victim defended himself and allegedly left a gash above Dombrowski's right eye, his mug shot shows. Dombrowski ran back into the woods but turned himself in to police a short time later.
Dombrowski had changed clothes but the East Coweta High School jersey was in his car, cops say. He was arrested.
Local Fox affiliate WAGA obtained body camera footage of the defendant bleeding as he spoke to cops.
An officer asked Dombrowski whether he knew the runner he allegedly attacked. He described the victim as an acquaintance and insisted there was "no bad blood" between the two. Cops are still investigating the motive for the alleged attack.
WAGA reported that Dombrowski ran cross-country for Northgate High School — which competed against East Coweta High School — before graduating earlier this year. He now attends the University of Georgia.
Dombrowski drove more than 100 miles from campus to the track meet location on Friday night and slept in his car, according to cops.
A Coweta Schools spokesman called the incident bizarre in a statement to the TV station, and a spectator said it was something out of a Netflix show.
