A Louisiana couple allegedly left their 4-year-old child in the care of another juvenile after learning he had swallowed a THC gummy, then headed off to a college football game — returning about eight hours later to find the boy unresponsive, cops say.
Mary Cormier, 36, and David Butt, 34, are each facing multiple charges stemming from the Sept. 13 incident, including child desertion.
The Scott Police Department reports both Cormier and Butt knew the child had ingested the THC gummy, and instead of seeking medical attention, the couple left the child with another kid so they could attend LSU's Sept. 12 game against Louisiana Tech, according to Acadiana News First.
The child was left without his parents for roughly eight hours as the couple went to the game, police say. Baton Rouge, where LSU plays its football games, is roughly an hour away from Scott.
When Cormier and Butt returned home, they allegedly found the 4-year-old breathing but unresponsive. The child was rushed to a local hospital, where he was placed in the intensive care unit.
Police have not provided additional details about the child's condition or whether he was still in the ICU as of Wednesday. It's also unclear how the child came to ingest the THC gummy and who it belonged to.
Cormier and Butt were both charged with second-degree cruelty to juveniles, child desertion and contributing to the delinquency of juveniles. Jail records show that they have since been released from custody after posting bond.
Police have not said who the juvenile watching the 4-year-old was. The incident remains under investigation.
