'That guy just killed me': Man hunted down his roommate before stabbing him to death with a machete, police say

A Florida man allegedly slashed his roommate to death with a machete, and police said the victim used his final moments to identify his killer.

Edy Rivas Rizo, 27, is in custody at the Broward County Jail after being charged with premeditated murder on Sunday. According to an arrest report reviewed by Law&Crime, police responded to a mobile home park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, at 1:15 p.m. after receiving calls about a stabbing. When officers from the Hallandale Beach Police Department arrived, they found the victim, who was not named, on the ground and "bleeding profusely" from a wound in his chest near his right armpit.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital about half an hour later.

Officers were told at the scene that the suspect, Rivas Rizo, lived in one of the mobile homes at the park and was currently at his home. Police wrote that they saw Rivas Rizo and ordered him to come out, which he did. According to the report, he was shirtless, covered in blood, and had a deep cut to his right hand that was treated at the hospital.

Police viewed surveillance footage that captured the alleged attack, which they said showed Rivas Rizo carrying a "large, machete-style knife" and stalking the victim, who was seen running away from Rivas Rizo. According to the report, the video showed Rivas Rizo slash at the victim with the knife, "causing a large amount of blood to spray on the street." The two men then struggled on the ground until witnesses broke up the fight and got the knife away from Rivas Rizo.

Rivas Rizo walked away with one witness while another witness stayed with the victim, who walked about 15 yards before he collapsed to the ground.

The witness who stayed with the victim told police that after the struggle was broken up, the victim walked toward him and allegedly said, "That guy just killed me" while gesturing at Rivas Rizo.

The other witness who went back to Rivas Rizo's home with him said he lived at the same home with the defendant and the victim. He told police that he remembered Rivas Rizo leaving the home and chasing after the victim. According to the report, he said Rivas Rizo returned with the machete and placed it somewhere inside the home.

Police executed a search warrant at the mobile home, where they saw "a large amount of blood." The officers also found the machete, allegedly with blood on the handle, at the back of the home.

When police questioned Rivas Rizo, they said he claimed the victim came out of his room and purportedly punched Rivas Rizo in the eye with one hand while holding a knife in the other. Rivas Rizo said the victim threatened him, but did not provide police with a reason why the victim would do that. According to the report, Rivas Rizo claimed the victim was wielding the machete, which made him "fear for his life." He then claimed the victim "accidentally fell on the blade" during the struggle.

After Rivas Rizo denied that he chased the victim, police showed him the surveillance footage. Police said Rivas Rizo changed his story, saying that he did chase the victim, but "meant to strike him with the broad side of the blade, not the sharp edge."

Rivas Rizo remains in custody at the Broward County Jail, where he is being held without bond. No next court date has been scheduled.
