An Ohio teenager allegedly plotted the murder of her mother with her boyfriend after she argued with her about household chores.
Bryanna Dutcher, 18, was charged with murder after prosecutors said text messages she attempted to delete from her phone proved she was plotting to kill her mother, 55-year-old Dr. Tamela Dutcher, with her boyfriend, 20-year-old Christian Evans. The Delaware County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that Tamela Dutcher was fatally shot in the kitchen of her home in Delaware, Ohio, shortly after midnight on Aug. 14. She died hours after being transported to the hospital.
Later that day, police identified Evans and his roommate, 21-year-old Dajameous Payne, as the suspects in Tamela Dutcher's murder. Bryanna Dutcher was arrested for obstructing justice, but she would soon face a much more serious charge.
Bryanna Dutcher, Evans, and Payne all appeared remotely for their arraignments in a Delaware County court on Monday, which was covered by local ABC affiliate WSYX. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by WSYX, Bryanna Dutcher and her mother got into a physical fight while arguing "about cleaning" on Aug. 13. While Bryanna Dutcher was "venting" about the fight with Evans, he allegedly told her, "If I were you, I would have killed her."
According to prosecutors, Evans and Payne were seen on a neighbor's surveillance camera leaving their shared apartment on the night of Aug. 13, "about an hour and a half before the shooting." Evans allegedly brought the gun, but prosecutors did not say who allegedly pulled the trigger and shot Tamela Dutcher in the face.
Prosecutors said that Tamela Dutcher's husband, Neil King, was rendering first aid to his wife and called 911. Evans and Payne then allegedly tried to kill him, firing shots in his direction that missed.
When questioned by investigators, Bryanna Dutcher allegedly lied about what she knew in order to protect her boyfriend, according to reporting by local NBC affiliate WCMH on the probable cause affidavit. The affidavit stated that Bryanna Dutcher told police that her parents did not know about her relationship with Evans because they were purportedly "very racist" and would have "kicked her out of the house."
During Monday's arraignment, prosecutors said that Bryanna Dutcher's texts with Evans painted a much different picture. Chief Criminal Assistant Prosecutor Mark Sleeper told the court, "There are now text messages recovered from her phone that appeared to be planning the crime in advance. The messages were deleted from her phone but they were recovered by law enforcement during a forensic download."
Several outlets, including WCMH, reported that Tamela Dutcher was a doctor who co-wrote an academic article for the International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health in January 2002 entitled "The violent and homicidal adolescent. Hearts darkened before time."
All three defendants are charged with murder and may face attempted murder charges in connection with the alleged attack on King.
Bryanna Dutcher, Evans, and Payne are all in custody at the Delaware County Jail, where they are being held on $3 million bond. They are scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 24.
