An 11-year-old girl in Oklahoma is behind bars after shooting and killing her 15-year-old brother, Sooner State police say.
The incident occurred at a residence on Lapwing Road in Edmond — a large city in the northern reaches of the Oklahoma City metro area.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the Edmond Police Department responded to a shooting at the house in question, according to an initial press release. Inside, investigators found the 15-year-old boy dead.
"At least one other person was present at the time of the incident," police said in their first public message about the shooting.
On Thursday, police announced an arrest in a follow-up press release.
"Just before 1:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10, investigators arrested the victim's 11-year-old sister and transported her to a juvenile detention facility, where she was booked on a charge of second-degree murder," the police department's second message to the public about the "heartbreaking situation" in Edmond reads.
"Because this case involves juveniles, no additional identifying information will be released," law enforcement added.
The 15-year-old seemingly died from a lone gunshot wound, according to a report by Oklahoma City-based NBC affiliate KFOR.
The siblings were alone at the time of the shooting, police said.
"We believe that she was the only other individual in the house at that time," Public Information Officer Emily Ward told the TV station.
Investigators reportedly worked through the evening to make the arrest. The department's spokesperson reiterated that the ages of those involved precluded releasing much additional information.
Police also said additional arrests are possible.
"The investigation is still ongoing, so of course, we'll look at every avenue," Ward told KFOR.
The second-degree murder charge against the girl is currently pending review by the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office. That review will determine whether it files formal charges.
Prosecutors echoed the mum stance taken by police.
"We understand there are many questions about this tragic case," the office said in a social media post. "Because it involves a juvenile, Oklahoma law limits what information can be shared. With that said, we cannot confirm or deny any charges related to this case at this time."
But the family's neighbors are offering some details.
One neighbor said the sister and brother had been seen together around the neighborhood and appeared to be close, according to a report by local CBS affiliate KWTV.
A second neighbor confirmed that the siblings walked around together, said she had often seen the girl walking home from the bus, and described the 11-year-old as "sweet."
"It's particularly heartbreaking, especially because of the ages involved in this one," Ward told the TV station. "Our thoughts are with the family, and anyone affected by this horrible tragedy."
