A 25-year-old man told Wisconsin cops who showed up to his family's home looking for his father, "I killed him," and that he's "been dead for over an hour," according to prosecutors.
Colton Christopherson allegedly made the chilling admission after plunging a knife into his father Allan Christopherson's neck multiple times and covering his body with a "tarp" inside their laundry room. He is now charged with murder.
Christopherson told police he tried to bury his 56-year-old dad at their "hunting land" in Washburn County after killing him on Sept. 26, but he got spooked by a person who was at the property when he arrived, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime.
Colton Christopherson allegedly drove his father's body back to the family's home in Casey and brought it inside "with a lot of heavy dragging," the complaint says. He began cleaning the basement where the slaying happened, washing rugs and wiping the "bloody floor" in an attempt to hide the crime scene, according to prosecutors.
"He planned to wait until dark and bury [Allan Christopherson] at the hunting land," the complaint says.
Deputies found Allan Christopherson lying face down on top of a "pool table cover" with a "green tarp" draped over him after Colton Christopherson confessed, according to prosecutors. The deputies were conducting a welfare check on Allan Christopherson after relatives and acquaintances had grown concerned about Colton Christopherson's recent behavior and drug use, the complaint says.
Deputies were approaching the residence when they spotted Colton Christopherson in shorts and a white shirt, emerging from the family's garage.
"[Deputies] asked the male if he was Colton, and he stated that he was," the complaint recounts. "[Deputies] asked how his day was going, and Colton said it was fine, and then stuck his hand out to shake [a deputy's hand]. … Colton's hand was shaking very erratically and he appeared to be very nervous."
Colton Christopherson allegedly admitted to killing his father after the deputies asked if he was home.
"[The deputies] asked Colton where [Allan Christopherson] was and if he could speak with him," according to the complaint. "Colton kind of put his head down, looked at the house, and said that he was dead. [Deputies] asked how he was dead, and Colton said, 'I killed him.' [Deputies] immediately told Colton to place his hands behind his back and handcuffed Colton."
Deputies asked if Colton Christopherson "was sure" that his dad was dead, and he allegedly stated "that he had been dead for over an hour," according to the complaint. Asked how his father died, Colton Christopherson allegedly said, "A knife."
Blood was found throughout the home, including "bloody footprints" in the basement where the pool table was located, per the complaint.
Colton Christopherson told police he had traveled from Minnesota because he believed his father had "hired someone to kill him," according to prosecutors. Colton Christopherson allegedly said his dad confirmed that suspicion during their confrontation.
"Colton killed [Allan Christopherson], as it was better that he did it than someone else," the complaint concludes.
Cops arrested Colton Christopherson, and he was charged with first-degree intentional homicide. His father was a high school teacher and golf coach who helped lead the Wayzata High School boys golf team to state championships in 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2017.
"Allan Christopherson … impacted hundreds of young golfers in his storied career," a post on the team's Instagram account reads. "He will be missed by all who knew him."
