An Indiana father is accused of leaving his four kids in a hot car in a Walmart parking lot with the windows "slightly cracked" and no air conditioning.
Eric Andrews Jr. is facing four felony counts of neglect of a dependent after being arrested on July 10, according to online court records.
That Friday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to a Walmart in Indianapolis, located at 5835 W. 10th Street near Interstate 465, after an off-duty employment officer who works at the store found Andrews' four children inside his car.
The kids — ages 1, 3, 3, and 4 — were "profusely sweating" and one of them was sleeping on the car's floorboard, according to court documents obtained by local NBC affiliate WTHR. The engine was allegedly running but the air conditioning was not on.
The officers said they were not able to wake the child up right away, though it's unclear whether that was due to the heat.
Andrews and the mother of the children, who has not been charged, walked up to the car after the off-duty officer found their children. The mother reportedly became "uncooperative and agitated," according to the court documents. Andrews allegedly attempted to defuse the situation and calm the mother down.
The couple admitted to being the children's parents and claimed they only left them inside the vehicle for a short time, police say. They did, however, admit that the air conditioning was not working in the vehicle.
Walmart staff provided surveillance video of the parking lot, and Andrews was arrested after police reviewed it, WTHR reports.
Paramedics evaluated the children, but they did not require hospitalization. A family member reportedly came to the Walmart and picked the children up that Friday.
Andrews was taken into custody and booked at the Marion County Adult Intake Center. He bonded out and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 31 for a pretrial conference.
