Man slaughtered his girlfriend at their front door before he went to hotel room he booked minutes earlier with his reward points: Cops

A Florida man allegedly walked into his $1.5 million home and unleashed a barrage of bullets at his girlfriend, killing her as she stood near the front door before he texted several family members and reportedly admitted he killed her.

Todd Wegrich, 53, stands accused of first-degree murder in the death of his 42-year-old girlfriend, who has not been publicly identified, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies first learned about the shooting on Friday when the people Wegrich allegedly contacted about the killing called cops.

They arrived at the home in Loxahatchee, where they found "several defects, consistent with shots having been fired," a probable cause arrest affidavit said. Cops forced their way into the home and found the victim just inside the front door, suffering from several gunshot wounds.

She was pronounced dead.

Neighbors told cops they heard several loud noises around 1 p.m. and saw Wegrich leaving the home carrying a bag and driving away.

Security footage from a neighbor's house showed two cars pulling up to the home shortly before 12:30 p.m. Wegrich and the victim got out of their respective vehicles and walked into the home through the garage.

At 1 p.m., audio from the recording captured seven gunshots. Wegrich walked out of the home 10 minutes later and drove away in his Mercedes. Cellphone data placed him at The Ben Hotel in downtown West Palm Beach. Investigators later learned he had booked a room at the hotel with his reward points minutes before the shooting.

Wegrich barricaded himself in his seventh-floor hotel room for several hours before the SWAT team gassed him out, local CBS affiliate WPEC reported.

Authorities have not released a motive for the slaying.

Local ABC affiliate WPBF reported that Wegrich appears to have mirrored the alleged crimes of his father, John Wegrich, who also allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend some two decades ago.

In January 2002, John Wegrich was wanted for killing his girlfriend a few months prior, along with a dozen bank robberies. An off-duty FBI agent recognized the suspect, who was later shot and killed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office when he reached behind his back, according to the TV station.

The younger Wegrich moved into the $1.5 million home in a gated community in May after relocating from Ocala, per WPBF. He remains in the Palm Beach County Jail without bond. His next court date is set for Oct. 5.
