An Indiana driver allegedly hopped a curb after cutting a corner too sharply and plowed his Ford SUV into two children playing outside, killing a 9-year-old boy and leaving a 6-year-old in critical condition.
Franck Bazil, 31, of Indianapolis, took off without helping the young victims, later telling investigators he fled because he was "scared" and "not knowing where to go," according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.
"[The children] were both hit by the SUV as it turned west on to Eagle Pointe N. Drive," the affidavit says. "The children were in a grass area near the roadway and as the SUV made a right-hand turn, the driver cut it too sharp and drove over the curb into the grass. As the SUV drove through the grass, it ran over both children, drove for a short distance and stopped."
Police say Bazil "briefly exited before getting back in" his 2024 Ford Edge and fleeing the scene. Officers allegedly found Bazil waiting in line at a car wash near Pendleton Pike and East 56th Street. They waited for him to exit then pulled Bazil over and arrested him without incident, according to the complaint.
"He said earlier in the day he left his apartment and as he was turning right to leave his apartment complex, he hit something," the complaint says. "Bazil said someone began honking their horn at him and told him he hit a child. He said he stopped but did not check on anyone, and after he realized he had hit a child he left because he was scared, not knowing where to go."
Bazil told police he drove around and called his family, who told him to go to a police station and turn himself in. He said he did not consume any alcohol or take any drugs before the collision and was the only one in the vehicle at the time.
Police say they "did not observe any signs of impairment."
Bazil was taken to a local hospital for a legal blood draw before being transported to the Marion County jail. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, according to the complaint.
