Lottery winner who shared jackpot was run over by girlfriend after confronting her for stealing even more, prosecutors say

An Oregon woman has been accused of running over her boyfriend with her car — but she claims he tried to kill her first.

Mary Ann McKinzy, 55, was extradited to Multnomah County on Sept. 18 after being arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Bakersfield, California, the Portland Police Bureau said. McKinzy was charged with second-degree murder, assault and negligent homicide in connection with the death of 75-year-old James S. Miller. According to reporting by The Oregonian, prosecutors said in court documents that McKinzy and Miller were in a relationship at the time Miller won $3,200 playing the lottery.

According to the court documents, Miller shared $1,700 of his $3,200 prize with McKinzy. However, she stole another $800 from him, according to court documents, which prompted Miller to "get a couple of his boys together" to find McKinzy and get his money back.

Miller was reportedly driven by a friend on Nov. 28, 2025, to McKinzy's apartment complex in Portland, Oregon, where the two men found her in her car in the parking lot. The friend, who spoke to police during their investigation, said that he did not know what Miller was planning to do. The friend later told police that while he was in the car, he heard Miller tell McKinzy to "open the door or I'm going to bust the window open."

Police said Miller told his friend to use his car to block McKinzy's car so she could not leave. McKinzy allegedly reacted by backing her car into the car Miller's friend was driving. He told police that when he got out to assess the damage, he saw Miller throw a knife at McKinzy's car. According to court documents, surveillance footage captured Miller stabbing McKinzy's tires with a knife.

McKinzy then allegedly put her car into reverse, backing over Miller. When Miller's friend told her to move her car off Miller, she allegedly responded that he was "trying to kill" her. McKinzy then reportedly drove away.

Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. After initially reporting his death as a possible stabbing, police later said he died of blunt force trauma.

By the time police had a warrant for McKinzy's arrest, she had left the state. Her car was found at a tire shop not long after Miller's death. Hubcaps found in her car matched one found at the scene. McKinzy also reportedly left many of her own belongings in her car before she fled.

The Portland Police Bureau said the U.S. Marshals Service tracked McKinzy down in Bakersfield on Aug. 5. She is currently in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 29.
