A North Carolina doctor is accused of opening fire on a Jeep on a Virginia highway during a road rage incident that injured two sisters, including a child.
Dr. Richard T. Arriviello, 61, is facing charges of malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm to another with intent to maim, and use of a firearm while committing a felony.
The Virginia State Police said in a press release obtained by Law&Crime that the incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday on I-77, about 3 miles north of the Virginia-North Carolina border.
Troopers said Arriviello shot into the Jeep from his Mercedes-Benz. Two sisters inside the Jeep, ages 12 and 20, were shot in the legs, according to cops. Both were taken to the hospital via helicopter. Cops say their injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
Arriviello allegedly fled the scene. Troopers arrested him on I-77 about 15 miles from the shooting location.
While cops did not detail what prompted Arriviello to allegedly shoot into the other vehicle during the road rage incident, they did cite the driver of the Jeep for reckless driving. It's also unclear if troopers recovered a gun. They did not release any other information. The incident remains under investigation.
The suspect is the owner of Family Urgent Care in Monroe, which is about 25 miles southwest of Charlotte, per the North Carolina Medical Board. He has no previous criminal convictions or malpractice lawsuits, the board says.
He's been practicing medicine in the state since 2010, but his LinkedIn page says he's been a doctor for 30 years.
As of Monday morning, Arriviello remained at the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond. His next court date is set for Sept. 29.
