A 28-year-old Massachusetts delivery driver is accused of stabbing a 60-year-old driver in the stomach during a road rage incident after the older man approached his car to exchange information about a possible fender bender.
Albeldy Manuel Pinales-Villar pleaded not guilty Tuesday to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60 in connection with the alleged stabbing of Aetan Mataev, records show.
"The stabbing was the result of a reported road rage," Lt. Hagai Brandon told the Newton Beacon.
Nashua, New Hampshire-based NBC affiliate WBTS first reported the victim's identity.
Mataev told the station he was pulling out of his driveway Monday afternoon when Pinales-Villar tried to "squeeze" past his car because "he didn't have patience." Pinales-Villar allegedly clipped Mataev's car and "just took off." Mataev then followed the other driver, hoping to exchange insurance information.
During a hearing Tuesday, prosecutors said that shortly after Mataev got out of his car, Pinales-Villar stabbed him.
"The alleged victim, who is 60 years old, exited his vehicle and approached the defendant to get his driver information, at which point the defendant quickly stepped out of his car and stabbed the alleged victim in the abdomen," Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Lee said, according to reporting from Boston ABC affiliate WCVB.
A witness recorded part of the encounter in which Mataev can reportedly be heard speaking to Pinales-Villar as he walked toward the other man's vehicle, Boston.com reported.
"Come on, get out of the car," Mataev reportedly said. "Let's go."
Pinales-Villar also recorded the incident on his phone and reportedly offered police the footage.
Investigators traced Pinales-Villar's license plate and located him at his home Monday in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood, where they arrested him.
Pinales-Villar's defense attorney, Christine Breslin, argued that the vehicles never collided, asserting Mataev was the aggressor and her client acted in self-defense.
"There's no crash, and there may not have been an accident; he tells me there was no contact with the car," Breslin told the court Tuesday, according to Boston-based Fox affiliate WFXT.
Prosecutors sought stricter bail conditions for Pinales-Villar, claiming he posed a threat to public safety.
"The fact that this was such a violent crime against a stranger due to a minor incident of road rage is very concerning to the Commonwealth," Lee said, per CBS affiliate WBZ. Prosecutors also reportedly asked the judge to bar Pinales-Villar from driving, require home confinement and prohibit him from possessing dangerous weapons.
The judge set bail at $5,000 and ordered Pinales-Villar to have no contact with Mataev. If released, Pinales-Villar is reportedly required to remain under house arrest.
He is due back in court on Nov. 10, records show.
