A baby girl drowned at a Pennsylvania hotel when her mother placed her in a spa tub — and guests of the establishment were there when the woman carried the lifeless child into the lobby.
Diontae Nicole Beckett, 25, has been charged with endangering the welfare of children and involuntary manslaughter, the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office announced.
Court records reviewed by Law&Crime show the defendant posted a $100,000 bond and waived her preliminary hearing.
On May 11, Beckett and her 5-month-old daughter were guests of a hotel on the 3600 block of East Newport Road in Intercourse, Pennsylvania, an unincorporated community about 60 miles west of Philadelphia, where the woman is from, according to court records.
Online records show the Best Western Plus Intercourse Village Inn & Suites is the only hotel on that block.
Beckett said she had been "consuming alcohol throughout the day and had taken her daughter swimming that afternoon" before they returned to their bedroom, per the DA's office. Authorities believe the woman "drunkenly placed the infant in a spa tub," causing the girl to drown.
"Though Beckett told police she never placed the victim into the spa tub, police discovered a picture and video on her phone depicting the infant in a spa tub," the DA's office continued, adding that Beckett remained unaware that she had brought the girl into the tub.
Authorities were apparently called to the establishment after Beckett walked into the lobby "carrying the victim, who appears lifeless in her arms," per surveillance footage. Several other guests of the hotel then called 911 and tried to help the child before first responders arrived.
"A chemical test of Beckett's breath determined that she had a blood alcohol content of 0.149% at the time," the DA's office stated.
Beckett was arrested. She is scheduled to return to court for a formal arraignment on Sept. 25.
