A pregnant woman was stopped in a turn lane when another driver rammed into her head-on, severely injuring the woman and causing her child's death, Indiana authorities say.
Latonya Berry, 31, faces charges including causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, reckless homicide, causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, per court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
Though the case was filed earlier this week, it stretches back to November 2025.
On Nov. 26, 2025, Kyra Johnson was driving in Indianapolis, waiting to make a turn in her sedan "when a speeding driver crossed into her lane and struck her head-on," a GoFundMe set up for her said. "With cars on both sides, she had nowhere to go. The impact caused severe, life-threatening injuries."
The other driver — whom authorities identified as Berry — was allegedly speeding at 95 mph in a 40 mph zone when she crashed into Johnson, who was eight months pregnant at the time, local Fox affiliate WXIN reported. The front of Johnson's sedan was crushed, and the windshield was shattered, photos shared in the aftermath reveal. The other vehicle — a Jeep SUV — flipped over.
"Kyra spent nearly two weeks in the ICU, underwent multiple emergency surgeries, was intubated and sedated for 13 days, and suffered numerous fractures, along with a large laceration to her forehead and scalp," the fundraiser states. "Due to the trauma, her placenta ruptured, forcing an emergency C-section. Her baby boy, Kye, was rushed to a children's hospital, and Kyra was unable to meet him for two weeks."
A photo shows that Johnson did get to meet her son, but he died on Dec. 17, 2025, "due to the injuries he suffered in the crash."
Court records do not yet show a scheduled court hearing for Berry.
Johnson's family has filed a civil case against the defendant, too, per WXIN.
