A Georgia man who claimed his mother was "abducted" after he burned her body in their home's backyard will spend a decade in prison.
Jason Christopher Campbell, 35, was found guilty on Friday of concealing a death in connection with the discovery of his mother's charred remains. According to local news outlet Now Georgia, 62-year-old Marie Campbell was reported missing on Jan. 6, 2025, after her belongings were found at the Homer, Georgia, home where she lived with her son. Police said Jason Campbell called on Jan. 8, 2025, to report that his mother had been picked up three days earlier by someone he did not know, and he had not heard from her since.
When he was questioned by police about where his mother could be, his story changed.
According to an incident report obtained by Now Georgia, police said Jason Campbell had also called 911 on Jan. 7, 2025, and told dispatchers that his mother had been "abducted by aliens." Police went to the Campbells' house and conducted a search that included the backyard. There, they found a fire burning and a burned mattress, along with human remains. Police also found a vehicle with one seat either missing or folded down.
The remains were identified as belonging to Marie Campbell. Authorities did not provide a cause or manner of death, and Jason Campbell was not charged with causing her death.
Prosecutors said Jason Campbell burned his mother's body to conceal her death. Following a five-day trial, Jason Campbell was found guilty of concealing a death. The judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
