A Kentucky retirement home worker was arrested for allegedly recording a 92-year-old man suffocating his wife instead of helping the victim.
Terrence Gabie, 41, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with knowingly abusing or neglecting an adult, the Louisville Metro Police Department announced.
His case is connected to that of Bert Morris, who has been charged with attempted murder relating to domestic violence and strangulation in the first degree, as Law&Crime previously reported.
Shortly after midnight Wednesday, someone called police about a "domestic violence incident" at StoryPoint Brownsboro retirement community. Officers responded to the facility on the 6700 block of Overlook Drive and were told that staff members "had intervened during an assault involving an elderly female victim."
Morris had allegedly placed a plastic bag over his wife's face and then pinched her nose. Paramedics rushed her to an area hospital for treatment.
Officers learned more about the incident from a video showing the alleged attack, local ABC affiliate WHAS reported. However, the footage was no accident.
Rather, authorities say, Gabie was filming Morris' actions instead of helping the woman whose life was in danger. He was the woman's designated caregiver at the retirement facility.
Gabie reportedly saw Morris trying to end his wife's life and pulled out his phone and recorded a 71-second video. He "failed to provide aide or assistance to the victim at this time, knowing the victim was in danger," police wrote in court documents, WHAS reported.
Authorities said Morris did not stop until another nurse intervened.
Morris was also arrested on Wednesday. When police spoke with him, he allegedly said his wife "needed to die."
A spokesperson for StoryPoint Brownsboro told WHAS in a statement that it "is working closely and fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities."
"While we are unable to comment on specific details at this time, the safety, well-being, and peace of mind of our residents remain our highest priority and at the heart of everything we do," the statement read.
The woman's current health status is unclear.
