A group of teens slammed, punched, slapped and kicked a man with mental and physical disabilities during a Florida bonfire party as he pleaded for them to stop, cops say.
Two of the suspects, 18-year-old Cody Stripling and 19-year-old Sabastian Bowers, are charged with aggravated battery on a disabled person and battery by strangulation, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.
The teens recorded the beatdown, a portion of which was posted on the sheriff's office social media sites.
"Congratulations to our new Scumbags of the Weekend, Cody Stripling (18) and Sabastian Bowers (19)," Sheriff Mike Chitwood wrote. "If you're a decent person, this video will disturb you. Obviously it didn't bother Cody or Sebastian."
A probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime said the incident occurred around 2 a.m. Oct. 23 in Daytona Beach. The victim told deputies his friend took him to a bonfire party but he stayed in his pal's truck for an hour because he didn't know anyone and was uncomfortable.
The victim later mingled with people at the party for about an hour when his buddy left to take people home and bring others to the party. The victim said he was sitting on a tailgate of a pickup truck.
That's when things started to take a turn.
A video lasting more than two minutes showed the victim "trying to mind his own business" when Bowers confronted him and slapped him, cops wrote. Stripling began to punch and slap him and Bowers slammed him to the ground, cops wrote. While the victim was on the ground, Bowers repeatedly punched and kicked the victim with his work boots, according to deputies.
During the alleged assault, the victim repeatedly asked "what did I do?"
The cameraman shoved the phone in his face and asked him what he did.
"I didn't do s—," he responded.
After another barrage, the cameraman again put the phone close to the victim's face and told him to "smile." The victim, who was bleeding from the mouth, swatted at the phone and the cameraman admonished him for touching it, the video showed.
The victim tried to shield himself as Bowers, Stripling and others continued their onslaught, cops wrote.
Bowers allegedly grabbed the victim by his hair and pulled his head back.
"Zoom in on his s—," Bowers said, per cops. "He's leaking like a little b—."
The victim begged them to stop.
"What did I do to you all? What the f— did I do to you all?" he pleaded.
Stripling then allegedly put the victim in a chokehold.
Eventually, the victim's friend returned to the party and took him to safety.
Cops say that the victim was never aggressive toward the suspects.
The victim suffered a concussion along with several cuts and bruises throughout his body. He was later able to identify Bowers and Stripling as two of the suspects who allegedly assaulted him, but deputies are searching for others.
Deputies say the victim "has [a] clearly visible birth defect on his right hand which causes him to have limited use of his right hand," according to the affidavit. The victim's mother told them that she believes he has a minor mental disability that has not yet been diagnosed, the affidavit added.
Stripling and Bowers were arrested Saturday and taken to the Volusia County Jail, where they remain without bond. Their next court dates are set for Dec. 8.
