'Kill her, kill her, kill that motherf—ing b—': Man tried to murder his wife, fell asleep, then attacked paramedic who woke him up, police say

A Wisconsin man is accused of trying to strangle his wife to death before heading for a nap.

Randal Cunitz, 59, faces multiple charges in connection with alleged attacks on his wife and a paramedic who responded to their home in Sparta, Wisconsin, after the wife called 911. Cunitz appeared in court on Wednesday for his arraignment, during which he pleaded not guilty to six felony charges including attempted murder, strangulation and suffocation, false imprisonment, and battery to a healthcare provider. He is also charged with five misdemeanors including battery, resisting an officer, and disorderly conduct.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by local CBS affiliate WKBT, Cunitz's wife called 911 at 3:33 p.m. on April 27 and told dispatchers that her husband "tried to kill her." A deputy from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrived at the couple's home and spoke to the wife, who said Cunitz was drunk and allegedly attempted to strangle her.

Police said the wife told them Cunitz slammed her head into the floor repeatedly. According to the complaint, the wife recorded the alleged attack and played the recording for the police. In the recording, Cunitz was allegedly heard saying, "Kill her, kill her, kill that motherf—ing b—."

The wife gave law enforcement permission to search her home, where they found Cunitz asleep on the couch. He reportedly did not wake up right away, and medical personnel were called to check on him.

According to the complaint, a paramedic performed a sternum rub on Cunitz, which woke him. Cunitz then allegedly grabbed the paramedic by the hair or ear, hitting the paramedic in the nose. Police reportedly had to pin Cunitz down while he struggled, and a deputy warned Cunitz that he would deploy pepper spray if he did not stop resisting.

Cunitz allegedly continued to resist and was sprayed with pepper spray. He was taken to a hospital, where he was "non-compliant" with medical staff.

After being treated, Cunitz was arrested and booked into the Monroe County Jail on $250,000 bond. He remains in custody. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 12.
