Woman on vacation with husband shot dead at shopping mall as she was walking back to her car to get a face mask

Two men who traveled to the Las Vegas Strip "on the busiest day of the year to 'make money' by robbing people" killed a woman who was walking to her car before killing a second person, Nevada authorities said.

Jordan Ruby, 22, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of 66-year-old Clarice Yamaguchi. Jesani Carter, 24, pleaded guilty to the murders of Yamaguchi and 60-year-old Hyo Sup "Richard" Um, along with several robbery counts.

According to a courtroom report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Ruby and Carter committed multiple robberies on New Year's Eve 2021 at casinos and the Fashion Show Mall.

Yamaguchi, who was visiting from Hawaii with her husband, was at the mall. The two were in a parking garage walking back to their car to get a face mask when the two defendants drove up in a BMW. The passenger got out and demanded Yamaguchi's purse. Her husband was trying to fight the man off when a shot rang out, hitting Yamaguchi.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ruby and Carter drove away and went to the Sahara Las Vegas, where they tried to steal a backpack from an employee and shot at him before driving to the Palace Station, per the Review-Journal.

They robbed a woman at gunpoint in the parking garage and then stole Um's wallet and shot him dead, according to police.

The duo fled but later crashed their BMW into a tree and were arrested.

Ruby is facing between 35 years and life in prison when he's sentenced on Sept. 24, per the Review-Journal. Carter is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 8. Prosecutors will argue the length of his prison term at that time but have agreed not to seek the death penalty, according to local NBC affiliate KSNV.

Before agreeing to plead guilty, Carter, in a jailhouse interview with the Review-Journal shortly after his arrest, insisted cops arrested the wrong guy. He claimed he was a big-time gambler who already owned expensive clothes, so there was no need for him to rob anyone.

"I'm gonna be free tomorrow," he said.
