Cops rescue toddler, baby after drunken man crashes car and flees into swamp he didn't know was there while carrying the kids: Police

A Florida man allegedly rolled over his car with a baby and toddler inside and then stumbled through a swamp with the two kids in tow while trying to flee cops.

Isaac Kinsey, 27, is facing two counts of child neglect with great bodily harm and several DUI charges, the Lakeland Police Department said in a press release.

The incident occurred early Sept. 9 on Highway 33 near North Combee Road. Kinsey allegedly crashed through a road closure sign and sandbags before his car overturned in a construction site and slammed into some tree roots.

Cops arrived at the scene, but they found no one. However, they did see two child seats in the car. Using a drone, officers spotted Kinsey carrying two kids, ages 2 and 10 months, in a swamp area about 30 minutes later. Video showed Kinsey stumbling while holding the kids and falling down, submerging the children in the water, cops said.

Eventually, cops found the trio and rescued them.

"I did not know there was a swamp right here," Kinsey said as officers ordered him to hand over the kids.

Kinsey was taken into custody. All three were taken to the hospital for treatment. Cops did not detail the relationship between Kinsey and the kids.

The defendant allegedly showed signs of impairment and admitted that he was intoxicated and had his license suspended.

Cops said Kinsey and the kids are lucky to be alive.

"This incident could have ended with the loss of two innocent lives. The rapid deployment of Lakeland PD's drone technology, along with the persistence and teamwork of responding officers, helped locate the children in an extremely difficult environment and get them the care they needed," the press release said. "There is no excuse for impaired driving. We are thankful these children survived and proud of the officers whose actions helped prevent an even greater tragedy."

Kinsey remains in the Polk County Jail without bond. His next court date is set for Oct. 13.
