'I don't think we are done yet': Cop allegedly used license plate reader cameras to spy on boyfriend's ex-wife more than 30 times — and she might not be the only one

A North Carolina police officer allegedly used her position of authority to gain access to license plate reader cameras to track the movement of her boyfriend's ex-wife.

Mooresville police Officer Elizabeth Snowman, 36, is facing a charge of illegally accessing computers, according to the Mooresville Police Department.

Chief Ron Campurciani told reporters at a press conference that an audit the department conducts each month of the Flock camera system revealed several problematic details.

Snowman allegedly used the system 31 times to spy on her boyfriend's ex-wife, including twice while off-duty. Department policy requires officers to state a reason for accessing the system. Snowman is accused of inventing reasons for the search, such as traffic violations, burglary or robbery.

Campurciani said the officer was untruthful about her use of the system when authorities confronted her.

"This is frustrating and aggravating," Campurciani said.

The chief said he believes other officers may have illegally used the Flock system.

"I don't think we are done yet, quite frankly," he said. "So, we're looking at other ones that could turnout to be nothing, but there are certain ones that we're taking a secondary look at, a deep look at."

According to Campurciani, his department will begin requiring a case number to use Flock.

Privacy advocates have long raised concerns about license plate reader cameras.

But Flock, in a statement to ABC News, argued that it can "help solve serious crimes and protect communities."

"Any misuse is unacceptable and responsible technology should help bring it to light," the statement said. "When it is misused, Flock's Audit Assistance helps expose it."

The department hired Snowman in January 2025. A human-resources investigation will determine her fate with the agency.

She was arrested Wednesday when she arrived at work and was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where she has since posted bond. She is slated to appear in court on Aug. 27.
