2 brothers gunned down by 'ticking time bomb' neighbor while backing out of their own driveway: Police

A Texas man faces two capital murder charges after police said he fatally shot two brothers in his neighborhood.

Daniel Antonio Perez, 40, is being held on $2.3 million bond after being arrested for allegedly killing brothers 20-year-old Dravyn Quiroz and 11-year-old Maliki Perales on Tuesday. During a press conference on Wednesday, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the two brothers were at their family's home in San Antonio, Texas, and backing a car out of their driveway around 7:30 p.m. when Perez allegedly left his home across the street and opened fire.

Salazar said police later found out that Perez also fired at the victims' two teenage siblings, but missed them.

Both brothers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Maliki died later the same night. Quiroz succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. Salazar said the two deaths merited two capital murder charges against Perez, whom he described as "a ticking time bomb right across the street from them" who attacked with "no warning whatsoever."

Salazar said that before the shooting, two of Perez's family members were seen on surveillance footage "physically trying to restrain him while he's armed with a gun." The suspect's family told police that Perez had a history of mental health issues but had never been formally diagnosed. Salazar told the press that "there had been some signs" of "depression, possibly seeing things that were not there," but no one reported Perez's behavior to authorities.

Local ABC affiliate KSAT obtained doorbell camera footage that allegedly showed Perez holding a gun as he approached another neighbor's house. He can be heard telling his neighbor, "I'm begging you," and reportedly claiming that he feared for his life.

Police said evidence did not support Perez's story that he was in any danger. After the alleged shooting, Perez ran from the scene while calling 911 to tell them that he shot his neighbors. Salazar said investigators tracked Perez's location using his cellphone and found him hiding in someone's backyard. The alleged murder weapon was found in a drainage culvert.

Salazar said at the press conference, "While clearly there's some sort of a mental health crisis going on, he still had the presence of mind and the culpable mental state to go conceal the weapon somewhere and then go conceal himself somewhere else."

Perez was charged with two counts of capital murder and four counts of aggravated assault. His next court date was scheduled for Nov. 3.
