A Minnesota man had 27 empty liquor bottles in his vehicle when he allegedly ran a stop sign and plowed into a couple, killing a man and seriously injuring his wife, police said.
Drew Bergman, 38, stands accused of vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, along with other charges, the Jordan Police Department said in a press release.
The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Old Highway 169 and Aberdeen Avenue in Jordan, which is about 35 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
Officers arrived to find a Ford Bronco with extensive driver's side damage and a mangled Mazda Miata. The driver of the Miata, a 69-year-old man, was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. His 65-year-old wife suffered several injuries, including a possible collapsed lung and broken sternum, a probable cause arrest affidavit said.
Paramedics rushed her to the hospital. The couple, who live in the area, has not been identified.
Witnesses said Bergman was speeding westbound on Highway 169 when he ignored a stop sign and slammed into the Miata, which was traveling south on Aberdeen through the intersection.
Bergman was the only person in the Bronco. Cops said they smelled alcohol on his breath and noted that he was unsteady on his feet. He also had bloodshot and glassy eyes, the affidavit stated.
When asked about the crash, Bergman said it happened "in the roundabout," according to police. However, authorities said, the crash actually occurred at a four-way stop.
Officers said they recovered 27 empty bottles of Fireball whiskey and several 50-milliliter containers of other distilled spirits from inside the Bronco. Investigators submitted Bergman's blood to a lab to determine his blood alcohol content.
Bergman was previously arrested in Wisconsin and North Dakota for impaired driving. He pleaded guilty in a 2025 Wisconsin case, according to police.
Bergman was taken to the Scott County Jail, where he remains on a $400,000 bond. Jail records did not immediately list his next court date.
His attorney declined comment.
