A 92-year-old man in Kentucky was at a retirement community with his wife when he placed a plastic bag over her face and pinched her nose, authorities say.

Bert Morris has been charged with attempted murder relating to domestic violence and strangulation in the first degree, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department. He has been booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, police said officers responded to a call in the 6700 block of Overlook Drive "on a report of a domestic violence incident." They had been called to StoryPoint Brownsboro retirement community, according to an arrest citation obtained by local ABC affiliate WHAS.

Officers said they learned that staff members of the facility "had intervened during an assault involving an elderly female victim," and the woman was brought to a local hospital to be treated.

The police department's Special Victims Unit Domestic Violence Squad began investigating, and investigators apparently found out that the incident was captured on video.

According to authorities, Morris could be seen placing a plastic bag over his wife's face and then pinching her nose. When investigators spoke with him, he allegedly said she "needed to die."

The woman reportedly remained unconscious in the hospital as of Wednesday. It is not clear whether both the defendant and victim lived in the retirement community.

A spokesperson for StoryPoint Brownsboro told WHAS in a statement that it "is working closely and fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities regarding this matter." The spokesperson added: "While we are unable to comment on specific details at this time, the safety, well-being, and peace of mind of our residents remain our highest priority and at the heart of everything we do."

Police said on Wednesday that the investigation remained active.
