Woman shoots fiance in the spine for cheating, then video-chats his lover with his dying body on the ground behind her

An argument about cheating between an Illinois couple ended with the woman shooting her fiance and then video-calling the other woman while he lay in a pool of blood in the background.

Rosa Lagrone, 40, has been sentenced to 38 years in prison after she was convicted earlier this year of first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Darnell Manns. The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office said the jury found her guilty after a four-day trial and about 2 1/2 hours of deliberation.

On Nov. 6, 2020, at about 2:15 p.m., Lagrone and Manns were at her home on Keswick Lane in Naperville, Illinois. The city is a western suburb of Chicago.

They were "arguing about Manns dating another woman," the state's attorney's office said. Manns was packing up his things to leave, The Daily Herald reported.

Lagrone shot Manns with a pistol, hitting him in the arm and torso. "The investigation later revealed that the bullet Lagrone fired went through Manns' arm and lodged in his spine," authorities added.

Manns was not dead yet. Instead, as he lay on the floor in a pool of blood, Lagrone used his Facebook page "to live video-chat with the woman whom Manns had been dating" with Manns "in the background." The video also apparently showed someone kicking Manns twice.

Authorities responded to the scene and took Manns to a local hospital. He died three days later.

Though Lagrone was originally charged with attempted murder, on Nov. 19, 2020 — after Manns died — she was indicted for first-degree murder.

She must serve 100% of her sentence before she is eligible for parole.

"Domestic violence continues to be a plague on society with the worst cases carrying permanent, heart-breaking consequences, as we saw in the murder of Darnell Manns," DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin said. He added that no number of years "will bring Darnell back to those who loved him and those he loved. Their grief will far outlast Ms. Lagrone's sentence, and I wish them strength as they navigate their lives without the love, comfort and support once provided by Darnell."
