Woman getting home with fiance watches man run up and shoot him dead because of road rage incident days before: Police

A woman had just arrived at her Delaware home with her fiance when she saw a man run up behind and fatally shoot him because of a road rage incident that had happened the previous month, authorities say.

Hector Sanchez, 31, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Donald Nave, as well as possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, the New Castle County Division of Police announced on Tuesday. The defendant was placed in the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $1 million cash bail.

On Sunday morning, Nave was with his fiancee, Chelsea Cooke, and their son, returning to their home on South Cleveland Avenue in Wilmington, Delaware. Suddenly, she said, a man ran up behind Nave and shot him.

"With me and my son near the car, he did not care. He came at 8:30 in the morning, no tints, no mask, no nothing," Cooke told regional ABC affiliate WPVI. "It was so stupid, for nothing."

The New Castle County Division of Police said that at about 9:10 a.m., its officers responded to the area "for a report of a shooting." They arrived to find Nave "suffering from multiple gunshot wounds."

First responders transported Nave to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives began investigating and identified "a possible suspect" and a Chevrolet Sonic "believed to be the suspect vehicle." Running the license plate, they determined the vehicle was registered to Sanchez, who is also from Wilmington.

Authorities also said they learned Sanchez and Nave were involved in a road rage incident in August. According to Cooke, Sanchez had been harassing Nave in the days before the shooting.

The details of that road rage situation are unclear.

Police said detectives found the Sonic in Wilmington and got a warrant to search Sanchez's home. That same day, at about 7 p.m., officers detained the suspect, saying, without specificity, that they "recovered evidence connecting him to the investigation."

Nave and Cooke shared two children, per the TV station, with a third on the way.

"You're a weirdo out here taking somebody's son and loved one because you can't control yourself," Cooke said, adding that she "can't wait to see [Sanchez] under the jail."
