A teenager with a blood alcohol content more than double the legal limit who was behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger ran a red light and fatally crashed into a teacher driving for Uber to make some extra money, Michigan authorities say.
Tracy Darwin Sutton, 19, stands accused of operating while intoxicated causing death and operating while intoxicated causing serious injury in the killing of 59-year-old Dwayne Antonio Harvey.
Police in Oak Park, a Detroit suburb, responded around 11 p.m. on Sept. 17 to the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway for a traffic crash. When officers arrived, they found a Dodge Charger and a Buick Envision, both of which had significant damage.
There also was a 23-year-old man lying in the middle of the street. He was a back seat passenger in the Charger and was ejected after the crash. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Sutton, the Charger's driver, suffered minor injuries.
Cops had to extract Harvey from the Envision before they rushed him to the hospital, where he died.
Video from a nearby business showed that Sutton was driving the Charger east on Eight Mile when he allegedly ran the red light and plowed into Harvey's Envision that was traveling north on Coolidge Highway.
Sutton's blood alcohol content was allegedly 0.161, more than twice the legal limit, local Fox affiliate WJBK reported.
Harvey was a math teacher at Oak Park High School by day and an Uber driver by night.
"At Oak Park High School, he was known for his warm smile, positive spirit, and genuine connection with students," the school said in a Facebook post. "He encouraged others, showed up for his students and colleagues, and brought a special energy to our school community each day."
He also was the senior class sponsor and was a big fan of Prince and the color purple. Students and staff will wear purple and play Harvey's favorite music on Friday to honor him.
"Mr. Harvey will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to students, and the positive presence he brought to Oak Park High School each day. He will always be a part of the Oak Park Schools family and will be deeply missed," the school said.
Sutton was booked into the Oakland County Jail, where he has a $2 million bond. His next court date is set for Sept. 29.
