Men accused of restraining a child to a bed refused to let authorities inside and learned the hard way that they should have opened the door: Police

Two men were arrested at a home in Tennessee after someone raised suspicions about how the children in the house were being treated.

Ernest Newbern, 58, and Anthony Wiseman, 68, were arrested on Friday after police said they refused to allow caseworkers from the Department of Children's Services (DCS) into their home. According to the Grundy County Sheriff's Office, DCS received a report about possible child neglect at a residence on Canyon Drive in Altamont, Tennessee, and caseworkers went to the house to question the adults living there.

Police said the caseworkers called law enforcement when a man with a gun confronted them and refused to let them inside "to continue their investigation."

According to the sheriff's office, DCS was notified that there might be a child being held inside the house who was "restrained to a bed using a restraint device." After refusing the caseworkers' entry, the man, later identified as Wiseman, locked the door behind him while two children were still inside.

After receiving the call from the caseworkers, deputies arrived at the home and were also greeted by a man with a gun, whom they identified as Wiseman. When Wiseman allegedly failed to follow orders from police, the deputies used a Taser on him, but it "was only minimally effective." The deputies were eventually able to disarm Wiseman and take him into custody.

Also taken into custody was Newbern, who police said is the father of the children.

Police said two "small children" were safely removed from the residence. They did not specify the condition the children were in or if they were in DCS custody. The sheriff's office said the nearby elementary school was on a "soft lockdown" until the situation was resolved.

Wiseman was charged with resisting arrest; Newbern, who lives in Florida, was charged with child neglect. Online jail records showed that Wiseman was released from jail, but it was not clear if Newbern was also out of custody. Both men are due in Grundy County Circuit Court on Sept. 10.
