A Michigan man who allegedly killed his mother called his father to let him know his car broke down after he fled the scene.

Ryan Hansen, 30, was charged with open murder and felony possession of firearms in connection with the shooting death of his mother, 56-year-old Diane Kimar-Luman. According to court documents obtained by local NBC affiliate WOOD, Hansen had been living with his mother and stepfather, Wayne Luman, at their home in Algoma Township, Michigan, for about two weeks after he was evicted. A family member reportedly told police that Hansen had not spoken with his mother for "several years" before he moved in, and that when he was under the influence of drugs, he would say she was "evil."

Police said Hansen held a grudge against his mother for purported wrongdoings during his childhood.

Several family members told police that Hansen was planning to "live off grid" and had a distrust of the government. They also said he had "a number of guns," including a black handgun that he "carried everywhere."

According to the court documents, which were also obtained by local CBS affiliate WWMT, Kimar-Luman and her husband "accepted" that Hansen wanted to live off the grid and reportedly provided food and financial support as he prepared to leave. On the morning of Oct. 15, around 8:30 a.m., Hansen was last seen by his brother in the kitchen with his mother, according to police. When the brother went to another part of the house, he told police he heard loud noises that he later learned were gunshots, followed by someone repeatedly saying, "Oh my God."

When Luman heard the shots at around 9:15 a.m., he ran to the kitchen and found Kimar-Luman on the kitchen floor with gunshot wounds. According to court documents, Luman called 911 and prevented Kimar-Luman's other son from seeing her. The retired elementary school teacher was pronounced dead at the scene.

Luman told police he saw Hansen flee the scene in his blue Chevrolet Suburban.

Hansen's father, Derrick Hansen, spoke to WOOD and told them his son called him that morning after borrowing a stranger's phone and left him a voicemail that said, "Hey, I don't know what's going on this morning. My phone's dead. I broke down. Give me a call." According to court documents, Derrick Hansen had already heard about his ex-wife's death when he got his son's call. Derrick Hansen told WOOD that his son sounded "super calm."

Derrick Hansen reportedly spoke to the owner of the phone and told her to stay away from Ryan Hansen for her own safety. At around 10:30 a.m., Derrick Hansen placed his own 911 call after learning where his son's car broke down.

Police showed up at the scene of the breakdown and saw Ryan Hansen loading his belongings into a taxi. The taxi driver consented to a police search of his car. According to court documents, police found a holstered Glock 17, a two-slot magazine holder with one magazine missing, and a safe in the trunk containing an AK-47 rifle.

Ryan Hansen is currently in custody at the Kent County Correctional Facility. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 28.
