An Illinois woman has been charged with murder after initially telling police that her boyfriend shot himself while they were both in a "fit of rage."
Lindsy Kendrick, 31, is in custody at the Kendall County Jail after being charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Kendrick is accused of fatally shooting her boyfriend, 28-year-old Daevin Wlodek, during the early morning hours of July 18. According to court documents obtained by local CW affiliate WGN, police arrived at Wlodek's apartment in Yorkville, Illinois, and found him lying on the ground with a gunshot wound and a gun near his feet.
Wlodek was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Kendrick was at the scene and told police that her boyfriend attacked her before he turned the gun on himself. She reportedly conceded, "I'm sure we both were in a fit of rage."
Police said Kendrick was on her phone when they arrived at the scene. Officers said they overheard her conversation, during which she told the other person, "he has a gun in there" and "he shot it," referring to Wlodek.
According to WGN's reporting on the court documents, Kendrick declined to participate in a gun residue test, but detectives were able to obtain the evidence they needed on "an exigent circumstance basis."
An autopsy determined that Wlodek died of a gunshot wound to the back, which exited through his chest. Long, blonde hair was found in his right hand, and he had several scratches and bruises on his neck, hands, and legs. Police said Kendrick did not have any injuries to her body.
Kendrick is being held without bond. Her next court date is scheduled for July 28.
