A 12-year-old girl was found alone at a West Virginia Dunkin' after wandering around for hours, and there was no sign that her parents tried to call 911, authorities say.
Clarence Spotsville and Nuwna Overton, both 33, have been charged with child neglect creating risk of injury, according to Kanawha County court records reviewed by Law&Crime. They each posted a $1,000 bond and were released from jail.
On Oct. 12, the girl was found at the Dunkin' located on Oakwood Road in Charleston, West Virginia, the state capital, local ABC and Fox affiliate WCHS reported. The child weighed just 40 pounds, and officers who responded could see the bone structure of her hands and feet, according to the Charleston Police Department.
The girl had apparently been wandering around her neighborhood for six hours before walking about a half-mile away to the Dunkin'. After finding her, first responders took the girl to the hospital to be treated.
Investigators learned where the child lived with her parents, Spotsville and Overton, and went there. According to a criminal complaint filed in the case and reviewed by area NBC affiliate WSAZ, there was no evidence that either parent tried to call 911 about their child being missing.
Police arrested Spotsville and Overton. When officers went to document evidence of the girl's condition, she was so weak that she had to be held up so officers could take a photograph, according to the complaint.
Other children were also under the care of the parents, per WCHS. The 12-year-old girl's current status was not immediately unclear.
Law&Crime reached out to the Charleston Police Department for more information.
The defendants waived their preliminary hearing that was scheduled for Wednesday.
